Tips for traveling as a group

Comfortable shoes

Lisbon and Porto are built on hills and paved with slippery stones. Worth adding to the shared packing list.

Sintra with tickets in advance

Palace entry is timed and summer queues are long. Leave early, by train from Lisbon or with a driver.

Book train tickets early

The fast trains between Lisbon and Porto fill up on weekends. Buy for everyone together and keep the tickets in the trip.

The little plates on the table

Restaurants bring bread, olives and spreads you didn't order — and they appear on the bill. Send them back if you don't want them.

Questions

Lisbon or Porto?

With a week, both. Lisbon is bigger and more varied; Porto is compact, with wine and the Douro Valley nearby. For a short trip, pick one.

When is the best time to go to Portugal?

Spring and autumn are pleasant for the cities. Summer is hot and busy but perfect for the Algarve beaches; winter is mild and wetter.

Do we need a car in Portugal?

Not in the cities — trains and public transport are enough. A car is worth it for the Algarve, the west coast or inland villages.

Can we add the Algarve?

Yes, with three or four more days. From Lisbon it's about three hours south to the beaches and cliffs of Lagos and Carvoeiro.
