Tips for traveling as a group

Check whether a JR Pass pays off

After the 2023 price rise, the pass only pays off with lots of long trips. For a route like this one, separate tickets are often cheaper.

Send your suitcases ahead

The luggage forwarding service (takkyubin) moves bags from hotel to hotel within a day. The group boards the train with just a small bag.

Small restaurants

Many restaurants seat 10–15 people. Book ahead for a large group, or split into small tables and meet afterwards.

A transit card on your phone

A Suica or ICOCA card in your phone's wallet works on trains, buses and convenience stores. Cash is still handy at small places.

Plan it together in Tripw

One shared itinerary

Everyone sees the same plan, day by day — times, places and flights in one place.

Decide with polls

Restaurant or museum? Open a poll in the trip, let everyone vote and move on.

Split the expenses

Log who paid for what as you go, in any currency, and see who owes whom at the end.

Questions

When is the best time to go to Japan?

Spring (cherry blossom in late March–early April) and autumn (foliage in November) are the most beautiful — and the busiest. Summer is hot and humid; winter is cold, clear and quieter.

Do Israelis need a visa for Japan?

At the moment Israeli passport holders can visit Japan without a visa for a short tourist stay. Check the current rules before you fly.

How many days does Japan need?

A week covers Tokyo and Kyoto with a day or two around them. With two weeks you can add Hiroshima, the Japanese Alps or Okinawa.

How do you keep a group together in huge stations?

Agree on the car number and exit ahead of time, and keep the train details in the trip so everyone sees them on their phone — even offline.
